Welcome
to the District of Oak Bay. I’ve been privileged to
serve on Oak Bay Council since 1996, and as your new
Mayor since December 2011. Together with our other
Council members, we are enthused and energized to
begin our mandate from the residents of Oak Bay.
The municipality has a long
tradition of good government since it’s inception in
1906. Now, new challenges present themselves --
technological and demographic changes emerge – and
residents’ expectations inform us on how to provide
improved services.
Our community has a strong sense
of identity, and a major priority in the coming
months will be the preparation of a new Official
Community Plan. The process will involve
considerable resident involvement and input, as the
new OCP will become the strategic plan against which
we manage our community in the coming years. We
hope you will get involved.
Oak Bay will continue towards its
goal to become a green and sustainable community.
We will look at ways to further reduce our municipal
carbon footprint. And we will strive to ensure that
our infrastructure supports active transportation
modes that reduce motor vehicle dependency, while
promoting physical wellness and mobility.
Increasingly, we recognize that
the ‘face’ of city hall is no longer the bricks and
mortar building on the Avenue, but rather the
municipal website. Planning for a new municipal
website is underway, and it forms an integral part
of improving community engagement – getting you the
information you need to stay informed. The creation
of new resident advisory committees and increased
transparency around other municipal programs will
further support this goal.
I look forward to meeting many of
you in the coming months! To that end, I am
available to meet each Saturday morning, 10
a.m.–12:00 at the Municipal Hall to discuss any
aspects of living in Oak Bay. Please
call Karen Green at 250-598-3311 to arrange an
appointment.
