Historic Markers Policy

A commemorative plaque here, a monument there: Oak Bay is home to over two-dozen markers commemorating our community's heritage. From the Chinese cemetery National historic site to the Stanley Cup memorial in front of Oak Bay High school, Oak Bay citizens have dedicated their efforts and resources to remembering individuals and events that have shaped Oak Bay.

Given a recent increase in interest for the dedication of heritage markers in the community, the OBCHC is developing a Heritage Markers policy that we hope will encourage this trend to continue. Following examples set in other communities around the world, the policy will provide a standard framework for the types of heritage markers that might be appropriate for public placement as well as nomination criteria. As all applications for heritage markers on public land require approval by the Oak Bay municipal council, the policy will also elaborate an application and adjudication process to streamline assist Council in decision making. A draft policy framework was presented to Council last year and is in the process of being finalized for Council's approval.

Oak Bay is now in it's centenary, the Heritage Steering Committee wants to ensure that all of the processes are in place to encourage citizens who wish to recognize those individuals and events that have made an important contribution to the community's first century.
