Designated Heritage Properties
The SANDHURST is located at 1512 Beach Drive. It was built in 1898/99 by John Gerhard Tiarks. The property was designated as heritage in 1974.
The property located at 1590 Beach Drive was built in 1928 by the architect K.B. Spurgin. It became a designated building in 2003.
What is now known as Glenlyon School (IECHINIHL) was originally the famous architects F.M. Rattenbury's own home. It sits along the seafront at 1701 Beach Drive. The first portion of the property was built in 1898. With additions, the school now has some 300 students.
The EASTMAN RESIDENCE at 2087 Byron Street was built in 1892/93. Architect is unknown. The tiny residence in front of a now larger home became designated as heritage in 1993.
The HAMILTON SMITH home at 2753 Cavendish Avenue was built in 1912 and owned by one family until 1985. Architect is unknown. It was formally designated as heritage in 1995.
The TAPLEY house at 2138 Central Avenue was built in 1912. Architect is unknown. It was designated in 1996.
The Tapley house garage was recently renovated with an appreciation for its original character and with support from an Oak Bay Heritage.
The property located at 2483 Cranmore Road was built in 1912 by an unknown architect. In 2003, it was designated as a heritage building.
The large house at 825 Foul Bay Road was designed by Samuel Maclure in 1910. Although the property, MELMORBY (later ELTHAM), is not designated, it was protected in 1996 by a Heritage Revitalization Permit.
The KILDONAN property at 931 Foul Bay Road has recently received a lot of attention, particularly for its gardens. It was built in 1913 by Samuel Maclure and was designated as heritage in 1987.
The TOD HOUSE located at 2564 Heron Street has also recently been in the news. It is the oldest of the Oak Bay properties and possibly the oldest in western Canada. It was built in 1850 by an unknown architect. The provincial government and the District of Oak Bay are presently negotiating an agreement in regards to its ownership.
The property at 915 Island Road was built in 1896/97 possibly by J.G. Tiarks. It is one of a pair that was built together with its counterpart at 929 Island Road, although only the one is legally protected. It was designated as heritage in 1977.
BLAIR GOWIE is located at 2031 Runnymede Avenue. The original home was built by Samuel Maclure in 1916. With additions, it became a designated heritage building in 1980.
A cluster of five houses known as PATIO COURT is located on San Carlos Avenue (2390,2396,2402,2408, and 2417 respectively). The homes were built in 1927 by architects K.B. Spurgen and J. Graham Johnson and were designated in 1993. Stuart Stark, in his inventory of Oak Bay's Heritage Buildings calls them, "a little storybook fantasy that appears at the end of the road". This is 2390 San Carlos Avenue.

The property at 3385 Upper Terrace was built in 1912 by an unknown architect. It is not designated, but has been protected under a heritage covenant since 1998.
The ELLIOT RESIDENCE resides at 1255 Victoria Avenue and was built in 1912 by R.T. Garrow. It was designated as a heritage building in 1993.
The property on 1149 Victoria Avenue was built in 1912. Architect is unknown. The building is not designated as heritage, but was protected by a Heritage Revitalization Permit in 2002.
The building on 1344 Victoria Avenue was built in 1912 by an unknown architect. The property became designated as heritage in 1997.
ANNANDALE was built in 1897/98 by John Gerhard Tiarks. It sits at 1587 York Place and is considered by Stuart Stark in his Oak Bay building inventory to be "probably the most significant house in Oak Bay". Over the years, many notable people lived and dined within its vast and elegant rooms.
